Often we find ourselves in situations where we don’t have any prior knowledge that exactly fits the situation. And we “figure it out as we go”. But do we really “fly blindly” into the future? Even Captain James T. Kirk said “lay in a course to …” before issuing the command to go to work 10.
Sometimes the situation is unknown. Or the path to take to navigate the experience or how we feel in it. Sometimes the emotion is so overpowering we feel “paralyzed” and unable to do much of anything. And other times, there is a lot less emotion and we just piece through what we need to do.
What I am trying to say is that even in the absence of clear, previously obtained experience. we can and do figure it out. How? By searching “the memory banks” for similar emotions or experiences and then evaluating of any of them are similar to where we are now. Or, if emotion isn’t the driving factor , we search for similar experiences. “What did I do the last time …… happened?”
We are capable of handling situations we have never experienced either by internally looking for previous memories which can help guide us, or in the moment relying upon someone else to take that responsibility because we can’t.
New experiences can be “scary,” even when you are in a calm state of mind. That doesn’t mean we have to be afraid. If possible, take advantage to learn everything you can about dealing with it; about how you felt when it happened.
You are better after the next experience than you were before it. Change is one step at a time; not the Boston Marathon.
